Nevada Troopers Struck and Killed Thursday Identified Suspect Charged with DUI

Loss of Two Nevada State Police Troopers to a Hit-and-Run Driver

There are few things that sadden us more than hearing of law enforcement officers losing their lives in the line of duty. That’s what happened in Las Vegas when Sgt. Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix were fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver while they assisted a motorist who had pulled off to the side of the freeway and fallen asleep at the wheel early Thursday morning. It’s an unfortunate reminder of how dangerous their work can be and how important it is for us, as a community, to appreciate and support their efforts.

The Suspect

The suspect in this case, later identified by authorities as Jemarcus Williams, was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on two counts each of reckless driving resulting in death, DUI resulting in death and “duty to stop at the scene of an accident involving death,” police said. It’s important to note that Williams is only a suspect at this time and should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

Driving under the influence is a serious offense that puts the lives of others at risk. In this case, it tragically resulted in the loss of two lives. It’s important for everyone to understand the dangers and potential consequences of driving under the influence to prevent future incidents like this from happening.

The Victim – Trooper Alberto Felix

Trooper Alberto Felix was a veteran of the United States Air Force and had been with state police since 2019, the department said. He had dedicated his life to serving his country and his community, and his loss is a tragedy felt deeply by those who knew him.

As a society, we tend to take law enforcement officers for granted. We expect them to respond to emergencies, enforce laws, and maintain order. But the truth is, these men and women put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. Trooper Felix’s death is a stark reminder of the risks they face and the sacrifices they make.

The Victim – Sgt. Michael Abbate

Sgt. Michael Abbate had been with the department since 2013 and in November was promoted to sergeant, officials said. His dedication to his job and his service to his community have left an impact on those he worked with and the lives he touched.

Sgt. Abbate’s death is a loss not only to his family but to his colleagues and the community he served. It’s a reminder of the bravery and selflessness required to enter such a dangerous field and an inspiration to us all to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices of those who protect and serve.

Supporting Our Law Enforcement Community

Tragic incidents like this are a sobering reminder of the importance of supporting our law enforcement officers. They put themselves in harm’s way to ensure our safety and well-being, and it’s up to us to show them the appreciation and support they deserve.

This tragedy also emphasizes the importance of awareness when behind the wheel. It only takes a moment of distraction or recklessness to cause a serious accident. It’s up to each of us to make responsible driving choices and to prioritize the safety of ourselves and others on the road.

Rest in peace, Sgt. Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix. Your service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
